Asante Kotoko are expected to wrap up personal terms with Berekum Chelsea midfielder Hubert Gyau this week, as negotiations between the two clubs reach an advanced stage.
The 21-year-old rising star has been one of the standout midfielders in the Ghana Premier League this season, and his potential move to the Porcupine Warriors is viewed as a major reinforcement ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.
According to club insiders, Kotoko have been monitoring Gyau for several months and stepped up their pursuit after the player’s consistent performances for Berekum Chelsea this season. While the final transfer fee is yet to be officially disclosed, both parties are reportedly close to agreeing on the deal, with only final personal terms between Gyau and Kotoko left to be finalized.

Operating primarily as a central midfielder, Gyau has impressed with his vision, composure on the ball, and work rate on both ends of the pitch. He has often dictated the tempo for Berekum Chelsea and contributed directly to 11 goals across the league season—making him the club’s most influential midfielder.
In a 2-1 win over Hearts of Oak in March, Gyau was instrumental, providing both assists and earning wide praise for his control in midfield. He also scored a stunning long-range effort against Medeama SC in April, further cementing his reputation as one of the most technically gifted young players in the league.
Asante Kotoko head coach Karim Zito is believed to be a long-time admirer of the midfielder and sees Gyau as a perfect fit for his possession-based system. With Kotoko set to undergo a squad rebuild following a disappointing league campaign that saw them fall short of continental qualification, the acquisition of Gyau is part of a broader plan to rejuvenate the midfield with energetic and technically sound players.
Berekum Chelsea, on the other hand, are understood to be open to the transfer but are keen to secure a fee that reflects Gyau’s value and development. The club sees this potential move as a testament to their successful youth development efforts, having signed Gyau from lower-tier side Unity FC in 2022 and developing him into a league mainstay within two seasons.
If the deal is completed as expected, Gyau will become Kotoko’s first major signing of the off-season. He is likely to be unveiled officially before the club commences pre-season preparations in July.
