Former Hearts of Oak midfielder Frederick Ansah Botchway says he remains confident in his ability to earn a place in the Black Stars squad, while also raising concerns about how players are selected for the national team.
Speaking to GhanaWeb, the midfielder insisted he still has the ambition of representing Ghana at senior level, but believes his chances would improve significantly if he were actively playing in the Ghana Premier League.
“Yeah, I do [want to play for the senior team],” he said. “And most importantly, I think here in Ghana they don't normally select players from abroad [the smaller leagues]; they usually select those who are playing for the local teams.”
Botchway suggested that playing in the domestic league plays a major role in gaining national team attention, with players outside Ghana often struggling to attract call-ups.
He added that during his recent spell in Zimbabwe, he reflected on how things might have been different had he been featuring regularly in Ghana’s top flight.
“If I find myself playing in the local scene now, it's possible, and it works. I believe I can play—not only for the Galaxies but also for the national team,” he said.
“I think when I was in Zimbabwe recently, I considered that if I had been here with some performances in our local league, maybe I could have gotten a chance at a call-up.”
