George Afriyie, a Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) Vice President has urged the creation of an independent body to manage the Ghana Premier League, following recent controversies over bad officiating and betting issues.

Speaking to Asempa FM, Afriyie said the government’s growing investment in the league requires a professional and transparent management structure.

“With the government now investing in our league, I believe the leadership of the Ghana Football Association must set up a different body to run the league,” he said.

“The Premier League must be independent. It should be managed by an autonomous body to ensure professionalism and transparency.”

Afriyie added that the league should operate separately from the GFA secretariat, with the new body reporting directly to GFA General Secretary Prosper Harrison Addo.

“The league should be separated from the secretariat of the Football Association, and the autonomous body should be reporting to the General Secretary,” he explained.

His comments come years after GFA President Kurt Okraku promised in 2019 that the Premier League would one day be run by an independent body.

However, a committee led by Togbe Afede XIV has already given their recommendations, which are yet to be put into action.
