Black Stars head coach Otto Addo has confirmed that Hearts of Oak goalkeeper Benjamin Asare is currently Ghana’s first-choice goalkeeper following his impressive performances in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
The 32-year-old shot-stopper, who earned his maiden call-up in March, was handed his debut in Ghana’s emphatic 5-0 victory over Chad at the Accra Sports Stadium on March 21.
He retained his place between the posts for the next fixture, keeping another clean sheet as Ghana secured a dominant 3-0 win over Madagascar on Monday night.
Speaking to 3Sports after the match, Addo highlighted Asare’s current status in the squad.
“I think the next game is in June, and at the moment, he’s the number one. We decided for him. He did well in training. We have a good situation where the keepers are pushing each other,” Addo stated.
The former Borussia Dortmund player also praised the professionalism of fellow goalkeepers Lawrence Ati Zigi and Joe Wollacott, who provided strong support for Asare despite not featuring in the matches.
“[I am] really thankful for the way Ati Zigi and Wollacott behaved during this week, how they pushed Benjamin, helped him, and supported him. I don’t take it for granted. Big props to them. [Asare] deserved it. I’m very happy for him,” Addo added.
With the two victories, the Black Stars remain at the top of Group I with 15 points, putting them in a strong position to qualify for their fifth FIFA World Cup appearance.
