Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) President, Kwesi Nyantakyi, has pointed to rising incidents of hooliganism as a major reason behind the lack of sponsorship in Ghanaian football.

Speaking in an upcoming Joy Sports documentary, Nyantakyi expressed concern over the damaging impact of fan violence on the image of the local game. In recent years, multiple venues across the country have witnessed disturbing scenes involving unruly supporters, a trend he believes is discouraging corporate bodies from investing in the sport.

“When violence takes centre stage in footballing issues in the country, it drives away sponsors,” said Nyantakyi, who also served as CAF’s First Vice President. “A lot of people don’t want to associate themselves with bad brands tainted with violence and illegality.”

He further stressed that violence has no place in football and urged authorities to implement stronger measures to address the problem.

“Violence has no place at all in the game,” he added.

The Ghana Premier League has been without a title sponsor since betPawa ended its partnership in November 2023, leaving a significant financial gap in the local football ecosystem.
