James Kwasi Appiah, the former Black Stars coach, has confirmed that he has engaged in discussions with Asante Kotoko regarding the vacant coaching role.
Earlier reports stated that the Porcupine Warriors had approved their former captain as their new head coach. Abdul Gazale has been the interim coach for Asante Kotoko since Seydou Zerbo's dismissal.
Kwasi Appiah confirmed the news in an interview with Kumasi-based Pure FM, stating his willingness to assist the club. Kwasi Appiah explained that he couldn't demand to be named the new head coach without the CEO's knowledge. He added that he had been in and out of the club and was willing to assist in any way possible.
"Asante Kotoko has a CEO (Nana Yaw Amponsah) and I can't go to Manhyia and demand that I should be named the new head coach without the knowledge of the CEO," Kwasi Appiah said.
"I played Asante Kotoko for years and I have been in and out of the club. If there is any assistance I am willing to do that.
"For the past months, I have held talks with Kotoko but I told them to hold on because I received two offers but let us see what happens"
In recent months, he has discussed the opportunity with Kotoko but has been waiting to make a decision since receiving two other offers.
James Kwasi Appiah was a key member of the last Asante Kotoko squad to win the CAF Champions League in 1983.
