The 2025/26 Ghana Premier League season has barely settled into rhythm, yet already comparisons are being drawn between two defenders who embody the heart of their respective clubs: Asante Kotoko’s Ndongani Samba Gilbani O’Niel and Hearts of Oak’s Kelvin Osei Asibey.

Both players have emerged as commanding presences at the back, marshaling their defensive lines with authority and offering their sides a measure of stability in an often unpredictable league.

O’Niel, a Congolese who arrived at Kotoko in July 2024, has quickly won admirers for his composure on the ball and ability to read the game, adding a calm assurance to Abdul Karim Zito’s backline.

Asibey, meanwhile, continues to grow in influence at Hearts of Oak, where his blend of no-nonsense defending and positional awareness has been key to Didi Dramani’s early-season plans.

The debate over who currently holds the edge is one that will intensify as the season unfolds. For now, their parallel rise symbolises a refreshing narrative: two traditional rivals parading young defenders who could steer the destiny of the league.
