Legon Cities head coach Samuel Paa Kwesi Fabin has called on the Ghanaian government to provide financial support to revive the Ghana Premier League.

In recent years, many Ghanaians have shifted their focus to foreign football, often citing the perceived lack of competitiveness in the domestic league. However, Fabin, in an interview with Kessben FM, contested this view, asserting that the Ghana Premier League is not as weak as it is often portrayed.

According to Fabin, the mass exodus of players from the local league has significantly impacted its quality. He emphasized that financial backing from the government could help retain top talent and enhance the league’s competitiveness.

"At the end of the day, it’s all about money," Fabin said. "If teams from Ethiopia, Tanzania, Zambia, and Rwanda can sign our top players and pay them $4,000 to $5,000 monthly, while players here in Ghana playing for Kotoko are earning GHS 10,000—which isn’t even $1,000—it’s no surprise our players leave."

He continued, "Ghanaian clubs can’t afford to pay $2,000 to a player. Some of these African countries were far behind us in football but are now doing better by taking our players and paying them better than we can."

Fabin believes that with adequate financial support, the league could retain its top players and regain its stature. "Our league isn’t bad, but it’s all about money. If our leaders can invest in our league like some countries do, we will improve significantly. The government should support our league financially, and I believe our league will become more vibrant. Until then, player exodus will continue, and it won’t stop," he concluded.
