Mohammed Polo has expressed strong disappointment in the current standard of the Ghana Premier League, stating that only Benjamin Asare is good enough to make the Black Stars squad for the  upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Polo, a 1978 AFCON winner, is regarded as one of Ghana’s finest footballers. He enjoyed a 22-year career, made his name at Accra Hearts of Oak, and featured abroad for clubs including Al Wasl in UAE.

His remarks add to the ongoing debate over whether more Ghana Premier League players deserve a chance in the national team ahead of the World Cup.

According to the ‘Dribbling Magician’, the domestic league has declined sharply in quality, making it difficult for local players to compete and further added that he didn’t enjoy the last Super-Clash of which Hearts of Oak by a slim 0-1 in Kumasi last month.

“Apart from Benjamin Asare, no Ghana Premier League player is quality enough to be at the 2026 FIFA World Cup," the AFCON winner told Connect FM.

“The quality of the Ghana Premier League has gone down drastically. I watched the Super Clash the other time and didn’t enjoy it because the players weren’t good enough.

“Despite the red card Hearts of Oak in the game, Asante Kotoko couldn’t create anything significant in the game, and all went down to quality."

The Black Stars are preparing for their fifth World Cup appearance and have been drawn in Group L with Panama, England and Croatia

As part of preparations, the team will face Austria, Germany and Mexico and will be based at Bryant University in the USA during the tournament.
