Former Asante Kotoko winger Charles Taylor has launched a scathing critique of the club’s current playing body, claiming only a small fraction of the squad is worthy of wearing the famous red jersey.

Speaking during a live appearance on Angel TV and Angel 102.9 FM, Taylor did not mince words as he assessed the state of the Porcupine Warriors.

“Asante Kotoko is a big team without big players. Only 30% of the current players deserve to wear the team jersey,” he declared.

The ex-Kotoko star, who enjoyed a successful spell with the Kumasi-based giants, suggested that the club’s struggles stem from a lack of quality and character within the squad. According to him, Kotoko’s rich history and stature in Ghanaian and African football demand players with strong mentality, consistency, and match-winning ability — qualities he believes are missing in the current setup.

Taylor’s remarks come at a time when Kotoko have faced growing scrutiny from supporters over inconsistent performances and failure to dominate games, particularly in crucial fixtures. His comments are likely to intensify debate among the club’s faithful, many of whom have already voiced concerns about recruitment and overall squad depth.

The outspoken former winger stressed that playing for Kotoko is a privilege that comes with heavy responsibility, insisting that only players capable of handling pressure and delivering results should be trusted with the badge.

Kotoko's next assignment takes them to the Aliu Mahama Stadium for a week 25 clash against Karela United—a fixture Owusu sees as an opportunity to regain momentum.
