The stakes ahead of Sunday’s Super Clash have just been raised, with Richard Agyemang Boadi pledging significant financial incentives to Asante Kotoko SC players should they defeat arch-rivals Accra Hearts of Oak.
The mayor made the announcement during a visit to Kotoko’s training at Baba Yara Stadium Frank Amoakohene and other dignitaries. Speaking to the Porcupine Warriors squad, he urged them to rise to the occasion.
"We want you to score, and on Monday, you will be financially rewarded. Beat them—Hearts of Oak," Mayor Boadi declared.
The timing could not be more critical. Kotoko have managed just one win in their last four matches across all competitions, including a 3–1 league defeat to Heart of Lions in Kpando and a penalty shootout exit in the MTN FA Cup against Aduana Stars.
Mayor Boadi did not stop at urging victory; he called on the team to make a statement.
"If you are able to beat them by three or four goals on Monday, you will see the amount of money you will enjoy in this city. So play for each other, play for Kumasi, play for the regional minister, and play for Asanteman."
With Kotoko currently fifth in the Ghana Premier League with 35 points—just one behind fourth-placed Hearts—Sunday’s showdown at Baba Yara Stadium carries double importance: local bragging rights and the opportunity to leapfrog their rivals in the standings.
The presence of the Ashanti Regional Minister underscored the wider significance of the fixture. For Kotoko, victory would mean more than three points—it would be a triumph for the city, the region, and their supporters.
