Ghanaian football club Swedru All Blacks have named former Egyptian national team legend Ahmed Fathi as head coach, the club confirmed on Tuesday, ahead of their return to the Ghana Premier League.

Fathi, 39, takes charge of the Black Magicians as they prepare for their first top-flight campaign after a 16-year absence.

The appointment marks the former Al Ahly and Egypt national team defender’s first managerial role outside his home country.

“𝐖𝐞𝐥𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞, 𝐀𝐡𝐦𝐞𝐝 𝐈𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐡𝐢𝐦 𝐅𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐢. The 39year old Egyptian holds CAF license A and has 15years experience in coaching,” the club said in a statement. “Before joining Swedru All Blacks he was the assistant manager of Egypt Premier League side Ismaily FC.”

Swedru All Blacks secured promotion earlier this year after a strong campaign in Ghana’s Division One League. The appointment of Fathi is seen as a statement of intent from the club’s new ownership, which has expressed long-term ambitions of restoring the team to its former glory.

Fathi, who earned over 120 caps for Egypt and featured in three Africa Cup of Nations-winning squads, retired from professional football in 2023. He previously worked as a technical advisor at Future FC in the Egyptian Premier League.

He is joined by video analyst Mohammed Adily, whose role will strengthen All Blacks scouting operations and tactical planning as they look to secure survival and stability in the top flight."

The new season of the Ghana Premier League is scheduled to kick off in September.
