Former Black Stars captain, Stephen Appiah, has expressed deep concern about Accra Hearts of Oak's recent challenges, particularly their difficulty in securing victories in matches they would have once dominated.
Appiah, an iconic figure in Ghanaian football, lamented the noticeable deviation of the current Hearts of Oak from the powerhouse he once knew.
This commentary comes on the heels of the Phobians' 3-2 defeat against archrivals Asante Kotoko in the 2023/24 Ghana Premier League's 14th match week.
With Hearts currently occupying the ninth spot on the league table, amassing 16 points from 14 games, coupled with their early exit from the 2023 FA Cup following a loss to FC Nania, Appiah's remarks underscore the pressing challenges facing one of Ghana's football giants.
Appiah emphasized the changing landscape of Ghanaian football, stating, "The Accra Hearts of Oak we know is not what we are seeing today. They are finding it difficult to win matches that we think they will."
He urged the players to recognize the heightened competitiveness in contemporary football and emphasized that success on the pitch is determined by their actions and performance rather than the historical reputation of Accra Hearts of Oak.
“ We have to know that gone are the days where you have only two or three teams winning over and over again. These days we have other clubs who are doing so well. It's very competitive.
"[The players] should know that going on the pitch is not about Accra Hearts of Oak. It's about what you do on the pitch,"
