Member of Parliament for Berekum West, Dickson Kyere-Duah, has thrown his support behind calls for Ghana Premier League matches to be played only at top-tier venues, even if it means reducing the number of host stadiums to just five or six.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Citi Sports following the league’s resumption—after a suspension due to the tragic death of Kumasi Asante Kotoko supporter Francis Pooley Frimpong at Nsoatreman FC’s home ground—Kyere Duah stressed the need for stricter venue regulations.

The MP emphasized that only stadiums with the necessary infrastructure and security measures should be approved for league matches to ensure the safety of players, officials, and fans.

“Facilities that are not fit for purpose should not be allowed to host matches. When you are talking about security, the stadium architecture, the structure also contributes to security on its own. So if you have stadia facilities that are not fit for purpose, the rules should not be bent,” he stated.

He further argued that if only a limited number of stadiums meet safety standards, all teams should be required to play at those venues, even if it means relocating their home games.

“If we have 18 Premier League clubs and only six, seven, or eight centers are fit for purpose, other teams should be compelled to move to such facilities. These are issues we need to enforce,” Kyere Duah added.

At the time of writing, Asante Kotoko sit at the top of the Ghana Premier League table with 42 points, holding a narrow one-point lead over their fierce rivals, Accra Hearts of Oak.
