The Ranking Member on Parliament’s Sports Committee, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, has called for tighter security for football teams travelling for matches.

Assafuah's comments follow the killing of Berekum Chelsea forward Dominic Frimpong, during an armed robbery attack on the team bus.

The incident happened after the club’s Ghana Premier League Matchweek 29 game against FC Samartex as the team travelled from Samreboi.

In a Facebook post, Mr Assafuah described the incident as a painful loss and a sign of growing insecurity on the country’s roads.

“I am deeply saddened by the tragic death of Berekum Chelsea’s Dominic Frimpong following the armed robbery attack on the team bus after their match against Samartex. This is a painful loss to Ghana football and a stark reminder of the growing insecurity on our highways,” he said.

He also urged the Ghana Police Service to act quickly.

“I call on the Ghana Police Service and all relevant authorities to swiftly bring the perpetrators to justice and urgently strengthen security for our clubs on match travels.”

Mr Assafuah extended his condolences to the player’s family, the club and the wider football community.

“May Dominic’s soul rest in perfect peace,” he added.

The attack has raised serious concerns about the safety of teams travelling for domestic competitions, with increasing calls for improved protection.
