Captain Federico Valverde delivered a remarkable performance by scoring the first professional hat-trick of his career to lead Real Madrid CF to an emphatic 3-0 victory over Manchester City FC in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League Round of 16 tie.

Having eliminated City from the competition in each of the previous two seasons, Real Madrid entered the encounter with a psychological advantage as they aimed to move closer to an eighth quarter-final appearance in the last nine campaigns.

Despite that history, it was the English side who made the brighter start to the contest. City created early pressure, with Jérémy Doku delivering dangerous balls into the penalty area, although none of his teammates were able to apply the finishing touch.

Real Madrid soon settled into the game, and their breakthrough arrived in spectacular fashion. Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois launched a long pass forward which was brilliantly controlled by Valverde. The Uruguayan surged in from the right flank, slipped past Nico O'Reilly and Gianluigi Donnarumma, before calmly finishing into the empty net.

Valverde continued to torment the visitors and doubled Real’s lead just before the half-hour mark. A clever attacking move saw Vinícius Júnior burst down the left wing and deliver a perfectly weighted reverse pass into Valverde’s path. The Madrid captain made no mistake, striking across goal with his left foot to find the bottom corner.

The 26-year-old completed a memorable hat-trick in style when Brahim Díaz chipped a delicate ball into the area. Valverde produced a clever flick over Marc Guéhi before calmly tapping home past Donnarumma to seal an unforgettable night.

Manchester City had an opportunity to pull a goal back in the second half when Vinícius Júnior broke through and was brought down inside the penalty area by Donnarumma. However, the Italian goalkeeper redeemed himself by diving to his left to save the Brazilian’s spot-kick.

City attempted to respond late in the match but struggled to break through Madrid’s defence. Courtois also produced a brilliant reflex save to deny O’Reilly after the midfielder pounced on a loose ball in the box.

The defeat ended City’s 11-match unbeaten run and marked the first time they had failed to score since mid-January. The English side now face a daunting task in the return leg as they attempt to overturn the deficit.

For Real Madrid, the commanding victory provides a major boost after a mixed run of form, although manager Álvaro Arbeloa will be aware that the tie is far from decided heading into the second leg.
