Minister for Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif, has confirmed that the Confederation of African Football (CAF) is exploring the possibility of hosting the Women's Champions League in Ghana.
The revelation was made during Ussif’s briefing to Parliament's Sports Select Committee, where he disclosed CAF's interest in bringing the prestigious club competition to the country.
The CAF Women's Champions League, introduced in 2021, has been hosted by Egypt, Morocco, and Côte d'Ivoire in its three editions. Ghana, now under consideration, could become the next host, thanks to its improved sporting infrastructure, largely credited to preparations for the African Games.
"CAF wrote to us that they wanted us to host the Women's Champions League," Ussif confirmed. "This is because they have seen that we have the necessary facilities, thanks to what we achieved during the African Games."
Since the competition's inception, two Ghanaian teams—Hasaacas Ladies and Ampem Darkoa Ladies—have represented the country. Hasaacas Ladies finished as runners-up in the inaugural edition, while Ampem Darkoa Ladies secured a fourth-place finish last year.
In addition to the potential Women's Champions League hosting rights, Ussif also confirmed that Ghana will be the host nation for the next edition of the African Athletics Championships. "The African Athletics Championships is also coming to Ghana next year," he added.
The Minister’s appearance before Parliament was part of discussions related to a petition submitted by the Save Ghana Football Forum earlier this year, addressing various aspects of football development in the country.
