The Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT) on Wednesday expressed "disappointment" at the appointment of Belgian Marc Brys as head coach of the national team, calling it regrettable.
In a statement released on Tuesday by the sports ministry, they stated that it was necessary to name a new handler of the team following news in February that former coach Rigobert Song's contract would not be renewed following Cameroon's poor performance in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Cote D'Ivoire.
The Minister of Sports and Physical Education in Cameroon, Narcisse Mouelle Kombi, however, confirmed the appointment of Belgian Marc Brys as the new head coach of the Indomitable Lions.
Kombi stated that the new head coach was appointed following "high instructions" of President Paul Biya.
According to the statement, Brys - who is a former coach of OH Leuven would be assisted by Joachim Mununga and Giannis Xilouris.
Moreover, New technical, medical and administrative staff were also named. Brys, 61, has coached 15 clubs in his career, in Belgium, the Netherlands and Saudi Arabia.
FECAFOOT said in a statement that it did not know about the appointment.
"Cameroon Football Federation has learned, at the same time as all Cameroonians, the appointment to positions of responsibility for the national senior men's football team," the statement said, adding that the "unilateral" decision violates a presidential decree which gives the federation the right to appoint coaching staff of the national teams.
"FECAFOOT intends to provide an explanation on this regrettable situation, as well as communicate without delay the action it intends to take," the statement added.
