The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has decided to retain Otto Addo as head coach of the Black Stars, despite Ghana’s failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
This confirmation comes from GFA Executive Council member Dr. Randy Abbey.
Addo, who led Ghana through six games in the AFCON qualifiers without securing a single victory, saw the Black Stars miss the tournament for the first time in two decades.
Despite this setback, Dr. Abbey, who also serves as Chairman of the Black Stars Management Committee, revealed that there are no plans to part ways with Addo.
Instead, the GFA intends to make changes to Addo’s coaching staff, with assistant coaches Joseph Lauman, John Paintsil, and goalkeeper coach Fatau Dauda likely to be dismissed.
“We think the GFA has made its decision already,” Dr. Abbey said during an interview on Original FM. “The GFA is keeping Otto Addo. Immediately, it’s about the World Cup qualifiers starting in March, and to ensure that the poor trend of results that led to non-qualification for AFCON is reversed, we are focused on getting the Black Stars back on track.”
Addo, who took over the reins in early 2024 after Ghana’s disappointing AFCON campaign in Ivory Coast, will continue his three-year contract with an option to extend for an additional two years.
The Black Stars will return to action in March, facing Chad and Madagascar in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
