Former Mali international, Adama Coulibaly (44) has expressed his worries about the challenges of Malian football, ascribing its failures to political interference and poor leadership.

The ex-defender, who achieved a great and successful career in Europe, highlighted the importance for knowledgeable individuals to be in charge of the sport in Mali.

“It’s simple; they have to put the right men in the right place. It’s a country where everything is political. Malian football is run by people who have no place in this sport. They don’t know it. In other countries, they understood. Football is run by former footballers.

"The top level has rules; you have to know them. In our country, everything is political. It’s very complicated and delicate in Mali,” Coulibaly stated.

His comments emphasize a long-held grievance within Malian football, where administrative and political challenges have often hindered progress on the field, as Mali continues to struggle for consistency on the international stage.

However, due to this many fans and analysts have echoed similar sentiments, calling for reforms that would allow former players and professionals with footballing knowledge to take charge.
