The centre-back of Ghanaian descent has severed ties with the Austrian top-flight outfit after spending five seasons together in the Austrian football competitions
Swiss-born Ghanaian defender Gregory Wuthrich has parted ways with Austrian Bundesliga side SK Sturm Graz, the club have announced.
The 30-year-old defender is ending his five-year marriage with the current League Champions after joining them from Australian top division side Perth Glory in 2020.
''SK Puntigamer Sturm Graz announces the departure of Gregory Wüthrich. The 30-year-old Swiss national joined SK Sturm from Perth Glory in Australia in 2020 and has since made 178 appearances for the Schwoazn, scoring eleven goals and providing seven assists. Wüthrich served as defensive leader and made the jump to the Swiss national team via SK Sturm. With the Schwoazn, Wüthrich won two cup titles, two league titles, and played in the UEFA Europa League, the UEFA Conference League, and last season's UEFA Champions League. Following the expiration of his contract, Wüthrich is now leaving SK Sturm after five years together. Thanks, Gregy!,'' an official statement over the departure of the experienced centre-back read.
The former Grasshoppers man revealed that he wanted to take a new challenge elsewhere, hence his refusal to ink fresh terms over extension following the expiration of his deal at the end of the season.
''After my contract expired, I decided not to renew it and to take on a new challenge. The past five years have been incredible; we have achieved everything imaginable. I would like to thank everyone at the club, and especially the fans—your support, which I felt every day, was simply incredible. The club has grown incredibly close to my heart, and I will always be a Schwoaza! Thank you and see you soon!," the 30-year-old told the club's official website.
Sporting director Michael Parensen added: ''Gregory Wüthrich has been a model player over the past five years, a leader of this team who has always put himself at the service of the team. Gregory's successes with SK Sturm speak for themselves, and now he wants to take on a new challenge, for which we wish him all the best. Thank you, Gregory, you will always be a welcome guest at SK Sturm!"
Wüthrich would not be short of suitors as Serbian giants Red Star Belgrade and Swiss elite side BSC Young Boys are all currently gunning for his services in the summer.
He played an instrumental role in helping Sturm Graz to lift the title in the just ended campaign having featured in 21 games in the Bundesliga 24/25 football season.'
