Ghana head coach Otto Addo has explained his decision to start Hearts of Oak goalkeeper Benjamin Asare in the Black Stars’ dominant 5-0 win over Chad in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
Asare, making his international debut, kept a clean sheet after impressing in training, edging out first-choice goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi.
Ghana delivered a commanding performance from the outset, with Antoine Semenyo opening the scoring early.
Inaki Williams doubled the lead with a powerful header, and Jordan Ayew made it 3-0 from the penalty spot before halftime.
“We assessed all our goalkeepers and watched several games. It was a close call, but Benjamin stood out in training,” Addo explained.
The Black Stars maintained their dominance in the second half, with Mohammed Salisu and Ernest Nuamah adding to the tally.
Otto Addo made several late changes, giving a debut to Lawrence Agyekum while Kamaldeen Sulemana, Francis Abu, Jerome Opoku, and Jerry Afriyie also saw action.
The win moves Ghana to the top of Group I, setting up a crucial clash against Madagascar on Monday in Morocco.
