Former Ghana captain Andre Dede Ayew has delivered an impassioned message to the Black Queens, urging them to stay united and protect their growing legacy as they prepare to face Egypt in the decisive second leg of their WAFCON qualifier at the Accra Sports Stadium on Tuesday.
Ayew’s words come amid reports of tension in camp over unpaid bonuses, with the former Swansea City forward calling on the players to rise above the off-field issues and keep their focus on national pride and purpose.
“I’ve been there as a player and you guys are building something the Black Queens have never had. Don’t tarnish what you have achieved because of money,” Ayew told the players.
“Yes, money is important, I’ll be the first person to say that, but it’s about national pride.”
The ex-Black Stars skipper reminded the team of their impressive run in the last WAFCON, describing it as a defining moment for women’s football in Ghana.
“You guys did something great a few months ago at the WAFCON. So it’s important that you don’t let this legacy be erased by noise and outside people talking about unpaid bonuses. Play for the badge and the nation. Make yourself proud.”
Ayew’s message is understood to have lifted spirits within the squad, helping them refocus ahead of the crucial fixture.
The Black Queens hold a 3–0 advantage from the first leg in Ismailia and will be looking to finish the job in Accra to seal their place in the next round of qualifiers.
