Former Ghana international Anthony Baffoe has expressed optimism that Thomas Partey will rediscover his top form in time for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, despite recent concerns over his fitness and playing time.
Partey featured during Ghana’s March international friendlies, where the Black Stars suffered back-to-back defeats against Austria and Germany. However, the midfielder has struggled for consistent minutes at Villarreal CF since joining from Arsenal FC last summer following the expiration of his contract.
Speaking on the team’s preparations, Baffoe highlighted the importance of having key players at full fitness as Ghana builds toward the global showpiece.
“Thomas Partey is not 100% in shape, which is also fully understandable. They need to be in top form,” he said.
The Black Stars are expected to regroup in May for crucial preparatory fixtures, beginning with a friendly against Mexico before wrapping up their build-up with a clash against Wales on June 2.
Ghana will be making their fifth World Cup appearance and have been drawn in a challenging Group L alongside Panama, England, and Croatia. They open their campaign against Panama on June 17, before facing England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.
After group-stage exits in both the 2014 and 2022 editions, Ghana will be aiming for a stronger showing, with Partey’s return to peak condition seen as a key factor in their hopes of progressing beyond the group phase.
