Former Ghana Football Association chairman Dr Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe has stated that Otto Addo should have stepped down as Black Stars head coach after failing to qualify Ghana for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
His comments come in the wake of Addo’s dismissal following Ghana’s disappointing performances during the March international window, where the team suffered back-to-back defeats against Austria and Germany.
The Black Stars endured a heavy 5-1 loss to Austria in Vienna before falling 2-1 to Germany in Stuttgart, results that intensified scrutiny on the coaching setup.
Addo had already been under immense pressure after Ghana’s failure to qualify for AFCON 2025 in Morocco—the first time in over two decades—with the team managing three defeats and three draws without a single win during the qualifiers.
Despite that setback, the 50-year-old guided Ghana to secure qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, marking the country’s fifth appearance at the global tournament.
However, Nyaho-Tamakloe believes the former Borussia Dortmund coach should have taken responsibility much earlier.
“After he failed to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations, I said to myself that he cannot handle the Black Stars,” he told Graphic Sports.
The Hearts of Oak board member further insisted that the decision to part ways with Addo was long overdue.
“The decision is right and long overdue. He should have realised he wouldn’t be able to handle the team and resigned after failing in key matches, rather than waiting to be sacked,” he added.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Football Association is expected to announce a new head coach in the coming days, ahead of upcoming international friendlies against Mexico and Wales as preparations intensify for the World Cup.
