Former Ghana forward Augustine Arhinful has urged the Black Stars technical team to raise their performance following the team’s 5-1 loss to Austria.
The defeat on Friday is Ghana’s heaviest in 19 years, since a 5-0 loss to Saudi Arabia, and has increased pressure on the team ahead of their friendly against Germany tonight.
Speaking on Luv FM, Arhinful said the coaching staff must take a stronger and more careful approach to analysing the game and correcting mistakes.
“If I were part of this team or the coach, we would sit down together, go through the game, and pause at every mistake,” he said. “You point out where things went wrong and explain how it should have been done, especially in transition.”
He pointed to slow movement from defence to attack as a major problem, using an example involving midfielder Thomas Partey.
“At one point, Thomas Partey was moving forward but had to turn back because there was no support,” Arhinful explained. “He passed to Sibo, and suddenly the ball was back in our half. That tells you everything about how slow we were in transition.”
Arhinful said these issues should be addressed through proper video sessions with both players and coaches, so everyone understands what went wrong.
“You sit behind the television with the technical men and address these issues,” he added. “Then the players go back to their rooms and reflect on what they did and what they need to improve before the next game.”
He also questioned whether the current technical team is doing enough and warned that changes may be needed if results do not improved.
“The whole technical team needs to sit up,” he said. “Either we believe in them, and they step up properly, or we start considering other options.”
Ghana face Germany in Stuttgart, with kick-off scheduled for 18:45 GMT.
