Professor Peter Twumasi, Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), has been relieved of his duties, prompting the appointment of Mr. Dodzie Numekevor as Acting Director General.
While the specific reasons for Prof. Twumasi's dismissal remain undisclosed, scrutiny has mounted over his handling of the state stadia, which has drawn widespread criticism. The national stadia, under his leadership, have reportedly suffered from poor management practices.
Of particular concern was the controversial decision to shut down the Accra Sports Stadium during the ongoing 2023/24 Ghana Premier League to accommodate musical events. This action forced football clubs like Hearts of Oak, Accra Lions, and Great Olympics to relocate their home games, sparking outrage among football fans and media alike.
In addition to these management issues, Prof. Twumasi faced political setbacks, including a recent defeat in his bid to represent the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as a parliamentary candidate in the 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary Elections. His loss in the NPP Primaries for the Ahafo Ano South West constituency to Elvis Osei Mensah Dapaah further compounded his challenges.
Prof. Twumasi's tenure as Director General began on December 10, 2019, following the resignation of Robert Sarfo Mensah in the aftermath of his alleged involvement in the 'Number 12' exposé by Anas Aremeyaw Anas and Tiger Eye PI.
