Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kwasi Nyantakyi has urged the Black Stars to adopt a merit-based approach in selecting players for the national team, insisting that eligibility and ability should outweigh sentiment or emotion.
Speaking candidly, Nyantakyi emphasised that Ghana should be open to any player capable of competing at the highest level, regardless of previous decisions or perceived loyalty issues.
“My view is that the Black Stars are open to every Ghanaian who is eligible to play. If, at my age (57), I can play and score, then give me the chance,” Nyantakyi said.
He highlighted that public sentiment should not prevent talented players from being called up.
“Some people become sentimental and emotional, saying this guy dumped Ghana and so on. Players like Eddie Nketiah or Hudson-Odoi should be given the chance. Let us take out the emotions and give them the opportunity if the coach thinks they can compete favourably and earn a place in the team,” he added.
Nyantakyi further reinforced his point by pointing out past examples of managing challenging personalities in Ghanaian football.
“Ghana is Ghana, and Ghana is not for excellence alone. We have managed very difficult players before. Do you know Kelvin Boateng?”
His comments come amid ongoing discussions about potential call-ups of European-based Ghanaian talent for upcoming international fixtures, including the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
