Ghana midfielder Francis Abu says he still believes he can make the Black Stars squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, as he's yet to recover from a serious injury.

The 24-year-old has been out since November 2025 after suffering a double leg fracture during Ghana’s 2-0 defeat by Japan in the Kirin Cup.

At the time, there were fears the injury could keep him out for a long period and affect his chances of playing at the global showpiece. But Abu says his recovery is going well and he remains confident.

“I am in good spirits. I am on a good path to recovery,” he told 3Sports.

The France-based player recently visited the Black Stars camp in Stuttgart before their friendly match against Germany, where he spoke about his progress and future hopes.

Abu said medical checks and steady improvement in training have given him belief that he can return in time.

“For sure, especially with where I am now in my recovery,” he said. “I am now working with the ball alongside my physical trainer and progressing towards team training.”

The midfielder, who came through the Right to Dream academy, admitted he remembers very little about how the injury happened.

“I don’t remember much of what happened. I just remember asking afterwards how long it would take to recover,” he explained.

Regardless the setback, Abu travelled to Stuttgart to reconnect with his teammates and thank them for their support during his difficult period.

“They showed me support during these hard times,” he said. “I received a lot of text messages and phone calls, and I thought it was important to come and see them, say thank you, and support them in this important game.”

With his rehabilitation on track, Abu is now focused on returning to full fitness and hopes to impress head coach Otto Addo in time to earn a place in Ghana’s squad for the 2026 World Cup, which will be played in June and July.
