The Ghana Football Association has reacted to the tragic death of Berekum Chelsea midfielder Dominic Frimpong, confirming its support to the family of the deceased and the club and are calling for justice following the deadly highway robbery incident.
Frimpong, lost his life after he was shot in the head when armed robbers attacked the team’s bus along the Bibiani–Goaso road lasr night when they were returning from their Ghana Premier League week 29 fixture against FC Samartex.
The attackers reportedly blocked the road, forcing players and officials to flee into nearby bushes before opening fire.
Dominic wasn’t lucky and had a bullet struck his head and was quickly rushed to Bibiani Government Hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
In a statement, GFA President Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku described the incident as heartbreaking and extended condolences to the club and the entire football fraternity.
“This is a painful and heartbreaking moment for your club and for Ghana football as a whole. We share in your grief and stand firmly with you during this difficult time,” he said.
The FA also assured that it is working closely with relevant authorities to ensure those responsible are brought to justice, while emphasizing the urgent need to improve safety for clubs during travel.
“Please be assured of our full support as we engage the relevant authorities to ensure justice is served, while also taking steps to enhance the safety of all clubs,” the statement added.
Frimpong’s death has sparked widespread concern within Ghana football, with growing calls for stronger security measures to protect players and officials from henceforth.
