Former President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kwesi Nyantakyi, has expressed concern over the declining performance of Ghanaian football, citing the recent struggles of the Black Stars as evidence.

Nyantakyi, who resigned from all his roles at the Ghana FA, Confederation of African Football (CAF), and Federation of Football Association (FIFA) following his involvement in the Anas documentary, has now declared his candidature for the Ejisu Constituency seat in an upcoming by-election.

Reflecting on the state of Ghanaian football during an interview with Onua TV, Nyantakyi pointed out the Black Stars' disappointing performances in recent AFCON tournaments as indicative of the decline.

"Ghana football is not at a desirable level. Since 2019, we have consistently exited the AFCON tournament either in the first round or during the group stage," he remarked.

Nyantakyi highlighted the contrast between Ghana's past successes and recent struggles, noting the Black Stars' consistent presence in the semi-finals of the AFCON from 2008 to 2017.

"But from 2008 till 2017, we always made the semi-finals of the AFCON. We finished in third place in 2008, second in 2010, semi-finals in 2012 and 2015, second in 2015 and semi-finals in 2017"

However, he lamented the steep decline in performance since then, emphasizing the need for collective efforts to raise the standard of Ghanaian football once again.

‘‘But since 2019, we have always exited after the first round or even in the group stage. So if you drew a graph, you’d see a steep slope. So we all need to help to raise the level again.’’ he concluded.

The former GFA president, who served from 2005 to 2018, urged stakeholders to work together to reverse the downward trend and restore Ghana's footballing glory.

Nyantakyi's comments underscore the urgency for reforms and revitalization within Ghanaian football to address the challenges facing the sport and propel it back to its former heights.
