Rahim Ayew, the eldest of the Ayew brothers, has thrown his full support behind Jordan Ayew’s appointment as Black Stars captain, insisting his youngest sibling was the natural heir to the armband in the absence of Andre Ayew.

The issue of captaincy became a major talking point after Ghana head coach Otto Addo dropped long-serving skipper Andre Ayew during the 2025 AFCON qualifiers and the 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign. In Andre’s absence, Addo initially handed the armband to Thomas Partey, with Jordan Ayew and Alexander Djiku named as deputies.

However, following a disappointing AFCON qualifying campaign that saw Ghana fail to book a place at the tournament in Morocco, Addo revised the leadership structure, appointing the Leicester City forward as captain.

Speaking to 3 Sports, Raheem Ayew expressed pride in Jordan’s elevation, describing it as a long-overdue and rightful decision.

“From the beginning, since he got the captaincy, I was very proud of him because he deserves it,” Raheem said. “He was the oldest there and everything, so I was very proud and I said, ‘finally it has come to the owner.’”

He added: “It has to go the right way, and as soon as it got to the right person, we were there. If Andre is not there, it has to be Jordan.”

Jordan Ayew justified the trust placed in him by leading the Black Stars to qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, contributing an impressive seven goals and seven assists in nine appearances during the campaign.

Ghana have been drawn in Group L of the 2026 World Cup in North America, where they will face England, Croatia and Panama.
