In a thrilling encounter on Tuesday evening in Kumasi, Ivorian side ASEC Mimosas emerged victorious, defeating Ghana's Asante Kotoko 2-1 to lift the coveted 2024 President's Cup.
The match, played in honor of Ghana President Nana Akufo-Addo, drew a significant crowd at the Accra Sports Stadium, setting the stage for an electrifying showdown.
ASEC Mimosas wasted no time asserting their dominance, seizing control of the game early on. Kouame Yao opened the scoring for the Ivorian side in the 13th minute with a sensational long-range strike that left goalkeeper Frederick Asare helpless.
The visitors extended their lead shortly before halftime when they were awarded a penalty after Justice Blay handled a shot from Arthur on the goal line. Arthur confidently converted the spot-kick, giving ASEC Mimosas a commanding 2-0 advantage heading into the break.
Despite a spirited effort from Asante Kotoko in the second half, it was ASEC who continued to dictate play. However, Kotoko managed to pull one back in the 83rd minute when Steven Mukwala was fouled in the box, resulting in a penalty. The Ugandan forward stepped up and buried the spot-kick, offering a glimmer of hope for his team.
