Former Ghana international, Prince Tagoe, has expressed concerns over the decision to hand Mohammed Kudus the captaincy during the Black Stars' 0-0 draw against Sudan in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
In the absence of Andre Ayew and Thomas Partey, the West Ham United star was given the captain's armband in the match held at the Accra Sports Stadium on Thursday, October 10, 2024. Despite Ghana's dominance, the match ended in a goalless stalemate.
Speaking to Bryt FM, Tagoe questioned the decision to appoint Kudus as captain, suggesting that Jordan Ayew, a more experienced player, should have led the team.
“I don't know who decided to give Mohammed Kudus the captaincy armband. We shouldn’t rush him. He’s still growing, and we don’t need to put him under pressure. He is one of our future stars, and our captaincy should be systematic," Tagoe remarked.
The former striker also warned that improper handling of captaincy could breed internal conflicts within the team, as he believes had happened in the past.
“We always repeat our mistakes, which is not the best. There are players who could have led the team instead of Kudus. Captaincy breeds confusion, jealousy, and hatred in a team. The right things must be done because captaincy has ruined the Black Stars before," he added.
Tagoe drew comparisons to past captaincy decisions, such as when Asamoah Gyan was chosen over the likes of Sulley Muntari and Michael Essien, emphasizing the need for leadership roles to follow established principles.
Ghana, currently facing challenges in their AFCON 2025 qualification campaign, will need a much-improved performance in the return leg against Sudan in Tripoli, Libya.
