Black Stars Management Committee Chairman Dr. Randy Abbey has expressed support for flying Ghanaian fans to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, provided it is done transparently and responsibly.

The idea rekindles debate over the 2014 Dzamefe Commission’s recommendation that government funds should not be used to fly supporters to major tournaments following controversies surrounding the Brazil World Cup.

Speaking on Asempa FM, Dr. Abbey acknowledged that supporters play a vital role in motivating the national team, but stressed that logistics and financing must be handled carefully.

“Flying fans to the World Cup is something that cannot be denied, but I think it’s about how it is done,” he said.

“During the qualifiers, the fans travelled to support the team during away games, and it made a difference.”

He added that many nations, even those who do not qualify send fans to cheer on teams, underscoring the importance of atmosphere and representation at the global showpiece.

“When you talk about this, what comes to mind is the Dzamefe Commission. But beyond that, we have to look at the mistakes and the recommendations. But as for the supporters going to support the team, nobody can discount that, but we should look at how it will be done properly,” he noted.

Ghana sealed its fifth World Cup qualification after beating Comoros 1–0 in Accra and will know its group-stage opponents when the official draw takes place on December 5.
