Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams has justified the appointment of veteran coach Carlos Queiroz as head coach of the Black Stars, insisting Ghana needed a tactician who is fully prepared for the demands of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Speaking on Asempa FM, Adams explained that the proximity to the tournament—less than two months away—left no room for a long-term rebuilding project, but rather required an experienced coach capable of delivering immediate results.
According to him, the joint decision by the Ministry and the Ghana Football Association was to prioritise urgency while maintaining flexibility in the coaching structure.
“We needed a coach who is ready to take the team because the World Cup is just around the corner. Whether local or foreign, the coach must be ready,” Adams stated.
He further revealed that Queiroz has been handed a short-term contract running up to four months, covering the duration of the tournament, with any extension dependent on his performance at the global showpiece.
The 73-year-old Portuguese manager, who replaces Otto Addo, will immediately take charge of a challenging Group L campaign against England national football team, Croatia national football team, and Panama national football team as Ghana prepare for the global tournament.
