Ghana's all time top scorer, Asamoah Gyan has admitted he let his country and the entire continent down with his penalty miss against Uruguay at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
The 36 year old showcased his worth to the entire world in South Africa, having netted three goals at the World Cup to send the Black Stars to the quarter final- becoming the third African nation to reach that stage after Cameroon and Senegal.
His first goal was against Serbia in Ghana's opening group game, scored also against Australia and the USA in the round of 16- an incredible world-class display that earned him the BBC African footballer of the year accolade.
The former Asian Champions League top scorer admitted his technique in hitting the spot-kick against Fernando Muslera was wrong, and got him wept massively since he realised the disappointment he's caused Ghanaians and the entire African continent. He told FIFA TV;
“A day before the Uruguay game I shot 20 penalties against our goalkeeper at training, I scored all 20. I was going to my left side of the goalkeeper."
“I saw him going to the left. And then I saw him going to my right where I was shooting the bad. He feinted me and then went to where the ball went. I didn’t know how the ball went up. Technically there was something wrong. I didn’t have the right technique."
“I had to cry because I felt like I came from hero to zero. I let the whole continent, my country down. Anytime I’m in a room it just pops up in my mind. I’m going to live it with for the rest of my life." He concluded
