Black Stars head coach Otto Addo remains hopeful about the future of the national team despite recent setbacks in their bid to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Reflecting on the team’s current struggles, Addo emphasized that rebuilding is a long journey, but one filled with potential.

In a candid discussion about the team's performance in an interview with the GFA media, Addo acknowledged the challenging period the Black Stars have faced in recent years, including their struggles since missing out on the 2018 World Cup.

However, he also highlighted moments of success, such as Ghana's qualification for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar under his leadership.

“I think it’s a long journey. It’s a long time. I think the recent six, seven years where the team was struggling, and now it’s really, really a small downfall. But also the small highlight came with me, with the World Cup 2022,” Addo remarked.

With Ghana currently on the brink of missing out on AFCON 2025 qualification, Addo feels the weight of the responsibility. “Now I’m responsible maybe for a big, big downfall, for not qualifying. But like I said, mathematically we still have a chance, we will do everything,” he said.

Despite the challenges, Addo expressed unwavering belief in the quality of his players and the potential within the team. He urged patience and focus on the long-term process of development. “I’m convinced, very, very convinced that in this team, and like I said, I think if you know anything about football, and you saw our home games only, you know that there’s so much more in this team. And it’s a long journey, like I said, it’s a process,” he stated.

He believes that moments of failure can be pivotal for growth. “The team will work and reflect on their failures. And sometimes this situation can make teams even better,” Addo added.

Understanding the significance of football to Ghana, Addo also acknowledged the team’s responsibility to the nation. “We know what football can do to the nation. Football is a great equalizer. And we will work hard for the youth, for the nation, for everyone, to bring Ghana back to where Ghana belongs,” he stressed.

As Ghana looks ahead to their final qualifying matches, Addo remains committed to preparing his squad mentally and physically to fulfill the nation’s hopes. “We will try to prepare them mentally strong enough to fulfill this aim. And we’ll come back stronger,” he concluded.
