Karela United left it late to claim a dramatic 2-1 victory over Young Apostles FC in their Ghana Premier League Matchweek 31 encounter at the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium on Sunday.
The first half offered little in terms of clear-cut opportunities, with both sides struggling to find rhythm in a tightly contested affair.
The game, however, came alive after the restart. Karela broke the deadlock in the 53rd minute after being awarded a penalty, which Abdulai Hafiz converted with confidence, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way to give the hosts the advantage.
Young Apostles responded with determination and were rewarded in the 65th minute when they also won a penalty. Richmond Opoku kept his composure from the spot to level the score, handing the relegation-threatened visitors renewed belief.
With both teams pushing for a decisive goal in the closing stages, the match appeared destined to end in a draw. However, Karela had the final say in dramatic fashion.
Rahman Yaya emerged as the hero, netting a stoppage-time winner in the 90+3rd minute to secure all three points for the home side.
The result strengthens Karela United’s push up the league table, while Young Apostles are left to reflect on missed opportunities as their battle to avoid relegation suffers another setback.
Karela striker Felix Morto was named NASCO Man of the Match after an impressive display, playing a key role in his team’s hard-fought victory.
