Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, has criticised the state of the Ghana Premier League, describing it as one of the most unattractive leagues on the African continent.
Assafuah made this remarks on the floor of Parliament during deliberations on the Ghana Sports Fund Bill, which was later passed after completing its Consideration Stage and being approved by the House.
Addressing the wider issue of sports financing, the MP who also serves as Ranking Member of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Sports linked the league’s struggles directly to inadequate funding.

“It is clear that in our country as we speak, when it comes to resources that are supposed to be used to fund our sporting activities, we have a huge challenge,” he said.
“Let me bring your mind to even the Ghana Premier League as we speak; it is one of the most unattractive sporting activities even in Africa.”
Assafuah argued that the lack of financial support has affected the quality and appeal of the domestic top flight, insisting that the newly passed Sports Fund Bill is a necessary step toward reversing the trend.

“The growing unattractiveness is because of lack of funding. Funding that is supposed to be available to be able to boost morale in terms of the Ghana Premier League is unavailable,” he added.
“It is on that basis that we believe that we need to pass this Sports Fund urgently.”
Meanwhile, Aduana Stars head into the latest round of fixtures sitting top of the Ghana Premier League table.
