Maxwell Konadu, a former Black Stars assistant coach, believes the decline of the Ghana Premier League was due to the persistent exodus of players soon after they are unearthed.

According to Konadu, who was recently the head coach of South African side Black Leopards, stated that different from Ghana, the South Africa Premier Soccer League (PSL) continued to be competitive because players are being motivated to stay due to better wages.

"The difference here is that with Ghanaian players, once you score a few goals, you are gone the next season. It's not like that in South Africa because they pay them good money," Konadu told Graphic Sports.

"The players there are relaxed and not in a hurry to travel to Europe because they enjoy what they are doing at home."

Konadu, 52, highlighted the ramifications of infrastructure and stressed that even though players moving abroad increases their financial stability, it eventually takes away the quality of the domestic league.

"The South African league is very competitive. Clubs such as Mamelodi Sundowns, Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates are always in the CAF Champions League.

"Good infrastructure leads to beautiful football, and it helps their league a lot," he pointed out. "Until companies are encouraged to invest in our league, we will continue to struggle against countries such as South Africa,"
