Bibiani Gold Stars defender Vincent Atinga has voiced concerns over the persistent challenges facing players in the Ghana Premier League (GPL), particularly poor pitch conditions and inadequate salaries.
In an interview with Akoma FM, the former Hearts of Oak center-back shed light on the financial struggles of many players in the league, revealing that he has often stepped in to support colleagues financially.
"Playing in the GPL is really difficult for us, especially given our salaries and the types of pitches we play on, which is why players seek greener pastures elsewhere”
“I've been financially sorting out my colleagues in other teams most times because their salaries are low,” Vincent Atinga shared.
The state of football pitches in Ghana has long been a point of contention, with many clubs forced to compete on substandard surfaces. These poor conditions not only affect the quality of play but also heighten the risk of injuries for players.
Additionally, the issue of low wages has led to a steady exodus of talent from the local league, as players seek better opportunities abroad.
Atinga’s remarks underscore the need for urgent intervention by football stakeholders to improve infrastructure and player welfare. Addressing these challenges is essential for the development and long-term growth of Ghana’s football ecosystem.
