Ex-Hearts of Oak midfielder, Joseph Tagoe, reveals that the club still owes him part of his signing-on fee from his move from Great Olympics.
The diminutive midfielder joined the Phobians from their city rivals in 2005 and spent three seasons with the record FA Cup holders.
The 2000 CAF Champions League winners agreed to pay Tagoe GHc 6,000 [GHC 600 cedis] and a salary of GHC 1,800 [GHC 180 cedis], but the 2001 CAF Super Cup winners reneged on fulfilling the agreed transfer fee.
Tagoe stated that Hearts of Oak paid him only GHc 2,000 [GHc 200] with GHc 4,000 cedis outstanding.
Speaking to Linus Nartey TV, he explained the financial challenges he faced, emphasizing the need for improved player welfare in Ghanaian football.
“When I moved to Hearts of Oak I had a son and so the responsibilities took a toll on my form and I was not earning much.
“I don’t know how much Great Olympics took from Hearts of Oak for my sign on fee but Hearts of Oak said they would give me GHc 6,000 [GHC600 cedis] and my salary was GHC 1,800 [GHC 180 cedis].
“But Hearts of Oak gave me GHc 2,000 cedis out of the GHc 6,000 and they still owe me GHc 4,000 cedis.
“In Ghana, I don’t believe we have player welfare because all the welfare bodies like Professional Footballers Association of Ghana [PFAG] cannot really unravel the main problem.”
