Board member of Accra Hearts of Oak, Dr Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, has attributed the recent struggles of Ghana’s two most decorated clubs—Accra Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko—to deep-rooted leadership shortcomings rather than a lack of talent on the pitch.

In an interview with Graphic Sports, the veteran football administrator delivered a blunt assessment of the situation, insisting that the decline of both clubs stems from failures at the top.

“The challenges facing Accra Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko are fundamentally a leadership responsibility,” Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe stated, pointing to systemic issues that continue to undermine progress at both institutions.

According to him, the dip in performance is a reflection of poor structural direction and decision-making, which has impacted the clubs’ ability to remain competitive domestically and on the continental stage.

Once the undisputed powerhouses of Ghanaian football, Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko have struggled to assert their dominance in recent years. Their inconsistency in the Ghana Premier League has seen emerging clubs close the gap—and in some cases surpass them.

The situation has been even more concerning in CAF inter-club competitions, where both teams have endured a string of early exits, a stark contrast to their glorious history in African football.

Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe emphasised that a return to the summit will require more than just player recruitment. He called for a shift towards strategic, accountable, and visionary leadership capable of restoring stability and long-term success.

Without such reforms, he warned, efforts to revive the fortunes of the two historic clubs may continue to fall short.
