Accra Hearts of Oak board member Dr Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe has launched a fresh critique of the Ghana Premier League, describing the standard of play as persistently below expectations.

Speaking to Graphic Sports, the experienced football administrator did not hold back in his assessment, insisting that the quality of football in the domestic league has remained consistently poor.

“I have been monitoring our local league, and the standard of play remains very low,” he stated.

His remarks add to growing concerns about the competitiveness and overall standard of the league, which was once considered a key breeding ground for Ghana’s finest football talents.

According to Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe, the issues go beyond what is seen on the pitch, pointing to deeper structural deficiencies affecting the game at its core.

He identified weak player development pathways, declining coaching standards, and inconsistent officiating as major factors contributing to the league’s struggles.

These challenges, he suggested, have collectively undermined the quality of competition and slowed the growth of the domestic game.

The veteran administrator warned that without immediate and coordinated reforms, the Ghana Premier League risks losing further relevance both locally and on the continental stage.

His comments come at a time when Ghanaian clubs have struggled to make significant impact in CAF inter-club competitions, raising further questions about the league’s strength.

Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe emphasised that restoring the league’s credibility will require sustained investment in youth development, improved infrastructure, and stricter adherence to professional standards.

He believes only a comprehensive and long-term approach can revive the league and reposition it as a competitive force in African football once again.
