Asante Kotoko SC are reportedly on the verge of reappointing Nana Yaw Amponsah as Chief Executive Officer, with sources indicating that his return is gaining strong momentum within the club’s newly formed board.
According to emerging reports, the board—led by Mr. Kwasi Osei Ofori, James Osei Brown, and Dr. Kofi Amoa-Abban—has identified Amponsah as the leading candidate to take charge of the club’s day-to-day administration in the coming days.
The Porcupine Warriors have been without a substantive CEO since Amponsah was relieved of his duties in 2023. His potential comeback now marks a dramatic turn in leadership discussions at the Kumasi-based giants.
However, his expected return is not without competition. Former Ashanti Gold CEO and Ghana Football Association Executive Council member Frederick Acheampong is also strongly in contention, setting up a tight contest for one of Ghana football’s most influential administrative roles.
Amponsah, a well-known football administrator, has remained active in international football since leaving Kotoko. After his departure, he took up the role of president of FC Petrocub in Moldova, where he enjoyed significant success.
Under his leadership, Petrocub achieved a historic domestic double in the 2023/2024 season and secured their first-ever qualification for the UEFA Champions League. He also played a key role in ending Sheriff Tiraspol’s long dominance in the Moldovan Super Liga, marking one of the most successful periods in the club’s history.
Before his time at Kotoko, Amponsah also contested for the Ghana Football Association presidency in 2019 but lost to Kurt Okraku.
Nana Yaw Amponsah won one league title with Kotoko during his three-year stinct.
