Yahaya Mohammed, former striker for Asante Kotoko and Aduana Stars, has voiced concerns over the lack of sponsor interest in the Ghana Premier League, citing its current lack of appeal as a significant issue.
Following BetPawa’s withdrawal from its sponsorship deal midway through last season, the league remains without a headline sponsor.
In an interview with Asempa FM, Mohammed, who previously played for clubs such as OGC Nice, pointed out that corporate interest has dwindled because the league no longer holds the same allure it once did. "The Ghana Premier League at this moment is not attractive. During my days, sponsors were eager to partner with the Ghana Football Association (GFA)," he recalled. "I even remember Coca-Cola showing interest in sponsoring the GHALCA Top Four tournament."
Mohammed further highlighted that local players are increasingly choosing leagues in countries like Rwanda and Ethiopia, where incentives are more appealing compared to those in Ghana. He attributed the league's limited attractiveness partly to poor television coverage, which he believes deters potential sponsors. "The TV coverage is not good enough, and all these factors discourage the corporate world from investing in the league," he added.
The Ghana Premier League heads into its 10th matchday this weekend, with stakeholders hoping for improvements that could rekindle corporate interest and stabilize sponsorship for the long term.
