Asante Kotoko striker Kwame Opoku has expressed mixed emotions over the club’s 2024/25 campaign, describing their failure to win the Ghana Premier League as disappointing, but taking pride in their MTN FA Cup victory.
Speaking after Kotoko’s 2-1 win over Golden Kick FC in the FA Cup final at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium, Opoku said the team was determined not to finish the season without a trophy.
“We can’t go trophyless for all the hard work we’ve put in, so I’m very happy,” Opoku told 3Sports.
“We are Asante Kotoko — we can’t go trophyless. We were supposed to win the league, but unfortunately, we didn’t. So we had to do something for the club, and I’m happy we won this FA Cup.”
Opoku was the star of the final, scoring both goals — an early header and a late penalty — to secure Kotoko’s 10th FA Cup title. His performance capped off an impressive individual season in which he registered nine goals and two assists in 17 league appearances.
With the FA Cup win, Kotoko have also earned a spot in the 2024/25 CAF Confederation Cup, and Opoku has already set his sights on going further next season.
“Now the focus is to come back stronger and win the league,” he added.
The 24-year-old forward will be a key figure as the Porcupine Warriors aim to reclaim domestic dominance and make a mark on the continental stage.
