Hearts of Oak head coach Aboubakar Ouattara has hit out at journalists following his side’s hard-fought 1-0 victory over Medeama in the Ghana Premier League on Sunday.
The win, which ended the Phobians’ four-game winless run, came courtesy of a powerful long-range strike from midfielder Raphael Amponsah in the first half — securing a much-needed three points in their return to the Accra Sports Stadium after more than six months.
Despite the result, Hearts’ performance was widely criticised by fans and media alike for lacking creativity and intensity, continuing a trend of underwhelming displays — including their recent midweek defeat to Nations FC, where a Razak Simpson goal condemned them to a 1-0 loss.
In his post-match press conference, Ouattara didn’t hold back when asked about the team’s performance.
“Sometimes I ask myself, what do you [journalists] want?” he said. “When we win, you say the performance isn’t good. When we play well and lose, you still criticise. Tell me the truth — what exactly do you want?”
“For me, I want the three points. If I get them, all this talk doesn’t matter to me. The table doesn’t record performances — it records points,” he added.
Ouattara is no stranger to tense exchanges with the media. In December, he accused reporters of asking “unreasonable lottery questions” after a defeat to Asante Kotoko. He was also charged by the Ghana Football Association for allegedly skipping a post-match press conference following a game against Dreams FC.
Sunday’s appearance marked his first official post-match media engagement since that incident, having missed the midweek session due to medical reasons.
Hearts of Oak will look to build on the win when they face Vision FC next weekend in the Ghana Premier League.
