Liverpool have completed the signing of Dutch international Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen, making the dynamic right-sided defender Arne Slot’s first acquisition of the summer transfer window.

The 24-year-old has signed a three-year deal at Anfield after Liverpool triggered his €35 million (£29.5 million) release clause. The move comes as the Reds prepare for life after Trent Alexander-Arnold, who is set to leave the club at the end of the season to join Real Madrid.

Frimpong, who can operate both as a right-back and a right wing-back, rose through the ranks at Manchester City before joining Celtic in 2019. He later moved to Bayer Leverkusen in January 2021, where he flourished under Xabi Alonso’s guidance.

During his time in Germany, Frimpong became an integral part of Leverkusen’s squad, contributing significantly to their historic 2023/24 campaign, where they went unbeaten to clinch the Bundesliga title and also lifted the DFB-Pokal.

In total, Frimpong made 190 appearances for Leverkusen, scoring 30 goals and providing 44 assists.

As part of the deal, his former club Celtic are set to receive a sell-on fee, reportedly around £5 million, as confirmed by Sky Sports.

Liverpool are also reportedly targeting Frimpong’s former teammate Florian Wirtz and have submitted a significant bid for the highly rated playmaker, according to sources.
